The bells of Santa Maria de la Asunción were ringing as we walked up into Navarrete, in time to witness the parishioners in procession through the town with their statue of the Virgin, and gather together in the plaza to share lunch. Navarrete stands on the crossroads of the Camino de Santiago and the Camino Ignacio. St. Ignatius of Loyola lived in Navarrete in service to the Duke of Nájera, was wounded in the Battle of Pamplona and was later inspired to develop his spiritual teachings and found the Jesuit Order.
